Literature Text

Three Minutes before the End of the World

I am hesitating
from holding
her hips
trembling
beneath a paper skirt
in the liquid moment
before dawn

She smells something sweet
stronger
for the water in the air
suffusing the artificial fruit
invisible in her skin

Her lips
must be full
and glossy as the mirrored moon
but all I can see
are her hips
trembling between my hands
knowing that
this is inappropriate
in the middle of the street

At three minutes before
the end of the world
we should do more
than dread each others'
touch
But we aren't
So she trembles
and I swear

As the world ends around us
Mercy St.
comes alive with morning
The same applies as last time, but maybe I should write it all out everytime. I guess I'll play with it a little.

Inspired by Peter Gabriel's 'Mercy Street'.

The first stanza really pulled me in, always a good sign, and the others kept me there, also a good sign. The rhythm has a jagged feel to me (but then, I tend to read other people's line breaks as I would if they were mine, which doesn't always work), but I like it here, I think it reinforces the overall tone of the poem. I like the paper skirt and fruit and hesitation imagery. :) (Smile)
